Help! I’m Hormonal! Ideas for Her

Hormones can make you feel like you’re starring in a bad sci-fi. Unwittingly, the protagonist ingests the chemical, falls beneath a spell, or is bitten by—no! Not that!
Personally, hormones make me feel massive, destructive, furious—everything short of green-skinned.
God welded our emotions and minds to our bodies and their intricate balance. Of sleep. Of nutrition. Of hormones: testosterone, cortisol, estrogen.
And it’s not just the ladies. It could be his constant over-the-top drive, or even lack thereof, that’s wreaking havoc.
But since women’s hormones tend toward greater fluctuation, let’s chat about a few practical points with straight talk for girls. (Tomorrow, tips for the guys.)
1. You might feel more strongly when you’re hormonal (duh). Prep yourself to take this with a grain of salt.
Why? As a first step to managing emotions rather than them running your relationships. Think James 1:19: Quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry. Be quick to repent, too.
2. Grab extra armor. You might need more sleep, margin, or dedicated prayer toward self-control and patience. Your brain’s frontal lobe, which governs reason, decision-making, and impulse control, may be more easily overwhelmed. Strategize toward its greater equilibrium.
3. Set the bar a little lower. Dial back on your week since hormones are requiring a bigger slice of your pie. Plan for capacity to respond patiently or more steadfastly in relationships.
4. Explore the core emotion. Do you typically feel more angry? Depressed? Anxious? What lies beneath that? Rather than using it as an excuse to bring your family to heel, take time to journal, pray, and meditate.
Revisit your powerful insights when you feel like your chemical makeup has returned to a more even keel. Think about practical ways to take action.
God created our bodies and their rhythms. How could you use these as opportunities for more maturity?

Action points: What patterns do you see in your/your spouse’s hormonal responses? How can you get more intentional about preparing for them, rather than your house or relationship being bowled over? What are the ways this challenge has the potential to make your relationship stronger?
