A Prayer of Gratitude for God’s Greatest Gift
By: Keneesha Saunders-Liddie

Bible Reading:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14

Listen or Read Below:

What’s the best gift you have ever received? Can you remember it? Can you picture the day you received it? What are the sounds, smells, and what is the atmosphere in your memory? Or are those things not important because the gift was so precious and appreciated that you forgot everything and everyone and just looked at the gift in awe? I remember my dad bought me a pair of black boots with many silver straps and buckles. They had just the right amount of heel to be comfortable, so I wanted to wear them everywhere. I can still see them in my mind’s eye, and I believe it was one of the best gifts I ever got.

When I think of God’s greatest gifts, I think of when the Word became flesh and made his home among us. I think that God sending his Son to earth as a babe, knowing the future and the pain he would have to endure, is the best gift. I’m so grateful that he came, and I know that you are, too. Gratitude to our God should always be in our hearts and on our lips. Even when things are going badly and we cannot understand God’s plan, a heart of gratitude should define our lives.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us be thankful and full of gratitude for God’s greatest gift. We received someone with unfailing love and faithfulness. And now we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son. What a sacrifice it was for Jesus to come to the earth. I don’t just have to worship him; I get to worship him. What an awesome Savior is our Lord Jesus Christ; he was a part of the decision-making process to send himself to earth. We were granted a second chance and now have the opportunity to show our appreciation for Jesus coming to earth. I say hallelujah, the highest form of praise, when I think of all that God has done for us. We were helpless with no hope, and love came down to rescue us.

Just as I treasured those boots from my dad, I treasure and am grateful for the greatest gift from my Heavenly Father, who loves me more than life itself. Jesus became human and made his home among us. He had to leave his glory behind; the creator actually took on the form of the created. We are asked in God’s Word to be content with what we have. And I hope that as we look around our homes this Christmas, we are grateful for all the blessings, but most importantly, for God’s greatest gift: sending His Son to earth to become the Savior of the world.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord, I'm so thankful for the greatest gift you’ve ever given in the form of your son, the Lord Jesus Christ. I’m so grateful that you thought of me and made a plan even before I realized there was no hope. What an awesome gift from an awesome God who is the greatest gift-giver. Your thoughts towards me are precious, dear Lord, so I know that your gifts will always be good. If even sinful parents can give good gifts to their children, I’m not surprised that your gift shows your selflessness and amazing love.

I just want you to know that I am so grateful. Help me not just to say it but to show it to you, dear Lord. I’m aware of the failings of my heart, oh Lord, and how deceitful it can be. So Lord, I repent of any sin that I have in my life that's unconfessed. Cleanse me, oh Lord, from all unrighteousness and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to be grateful for all that you’ve done. Help me to show my gratitude to you by serving you, by praying without ceasing, and by living a life of obedience.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
