A Prayer for Boldness for the Body of Believers

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel. (Philippians 1:27)

I have this family member who, each time I departed her presence, for the longest time, left me with this lingering guilt. Because once again, I didn’t share Jesus with her. Not only was she not close to the Lord, but she didn’t even know Jesus as Messiah. In fact, I’m not even sure she believed there’s a God. And the sad truth is, I think that’s still her story. Which pains me, as it has for some time. And I bet you know this feeling too. I bet there’s someone in your life you long to know the Lord. Someone, maybe a lot of someones, you see hurting or wandering through life, lost and empty. You want them to know this Jesus who has become your living hope. Because you know the truth of his ever-present love, grace, goodness, and forgiveness would fill their days with more fullness. You know they would find the peace their souls are starved for. You know you want them with you in heaven for eternity. And you know you should do something, but you aren’t sure what and how. And for me, the guilty sense stems from what I seem to lack. Boldness. 

How about you? When it comes to the lost loved ones in your life, do you wonder: If you could just be bolder, then maybe you could save some souls? Like, if you had a big enough who-cares-what-anyone-thinks mindset, you could muster the courage to blatantly shout the gospel truth to each person God places before you. You know those gutsy people, don’t you? Well, that’s not quite me. Not naturally, anyway. I’m working on it, but my steps seem small. And I’m guessing I’m not alone. I bet you feel like your impact isn’t making much of a difference at times, too. 

But here’s what I’m learning about being bold on behalf of the Gospel. Yes, we are called to disciple all people. Yes, we are called to be bold. And we should continue to pray for boldness, direction, and strength to make strides to keep sharing. But what we shouldn’t do is let our seemingly “small” gestures keep us from showing up with what we have. Boldness isn’t just shouting “Y’all need Jesus” from the street corner or each time you enter a family gathering. Though if you feel called to these things, by all means, have at it. But we can be bold by simply living a life that reflects the light of Jesus. By going against the grain of the world. By keeping peace when people want to argue, saying something kind to someone who’s the center of gossip, offering prayer to another who didn’t ask for it, making the holy choice in an environment that doesn’t look and feel so holy, being the first to say sorry when you think they were more wrong, by turning the other cheek. By boldly taking an action, making a move, or saying a word that Jesus would say. Think on that? What could that be for you?  

In Philippians 1:27, Paul says, Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel. This is a reminder that our actions are a bold witness to our faith. God can use your Christ-like example just as much as you openly telling someone who Jesus is, because you are showing them who Jesus is. You are showing his love. And love is what everyone wants. That is a language every lost soul notices and understands.

So ask God what step you can take. Ask God for his help and strength. And be bold. Be bold to be obedient. Be bold in sharing the love of Jesus. Be bold in being more like Jesus. Remembering that God has used, is using, and will continue to use each and every bold step-by-step action to reach all of those he continues to place in your path.    

Let’s Pray:

Lord Jesus, You are the Lord of love. And I praise you that you and your love are in me. You have placed people in my path who I long to know you and this rich love. Who I long to experience the blessed life you offer, and to have the hope of forever together, with you in paradise. I want to be more bold to share the truth, your truth. Help me to do that. Show me the steps to take, give me confidence in your direction, and allow me the boldness to reflect you.

Thank you for the opportunity to play a part in the redemption of the lives of the lost and each of my loved ones. Thank you for what you have done for me. Thank you for what you are doing through my openness to obedience. Thank you for moving in the lives of those I love.
