Giving Her the Courage to Be - I Do Every Day - August 3

Giving her the courage to be

I spoke to a single friend the other day who’s considering delving into writing. Problem is, she hates self-disclosure and vulnerability in all forms. She might prefer having an ingrown toenail removed with Metallica on the loudspeaker.

I thought back to my first days of marriage, and a surprising side benefit (kind of like purchasing a laptop with this program you didn’t think you needed, and now can’t live without?).

What came creeping out was my…creativity.

I realized that as my husband poured into me, affirming God’s image in me in all the forms he could see—I gained confidence, which allowed me to try more. Soon, competence followed—and after that, courage.

And courage is an irreplaceable ingredient in creativity.

Now, nearly two decades later, my career and my version of motherhood thrive because of a creativity that might have remained untapped had my husband not coaxed it out of me, shivering. I’ll never forget the day I came home to a new music book on the old piano we’d found together. The note taped to the cover read, Just because I love the way you’re made.

It’s easy, I think, to find our mate’s gifts and interests as competition to our own agendas (If I let him play Ultimate Frisbee with the guys, it’s time away from the kids), or even to our own gifts and ability to shine.

But great marriages show the world more of God’s image—both as a unit, and as individuals. We help our spouses discover and enjoy God more deeply.

And by celebrating and advocating for the handiwork God’s created in us, and helping each other find the good works He prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:10), we expand His kingdom, His renown.
