"Greater love has no one than this: that someone lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13
Relationships take time, effort, and intentionality. Even those we value and love can grow distant from us if we are careless in maintaining our relationships. If we aren’t mindful, our spouse can become a coworker, our siblings strangers, our children people we hardly hear from, and friends acquaintances.
As a foster and adoptive mom, I’ve learned so many great lessons about the importance of intentionality in connecting with those we have chosen and are blessed to love. One of our beautiful kids joined our family with the goal of adoption when they were 2 and a half years old. She was adorable, tiny, and full of anxiety. She barely spoke, moved, or interacted during her first months while she adjusted to our home; her body was overwhelmed by the trauma and losses she had already endured in her short life.
Becoming her mother was a process. It was different from any other mothering I had ever experienced. Our bond grew slowly and steadily as she learned that we are safe people. Our whole family bore witness as her body unwound, her words slowly growing louder and clearer, and her legs more ready to play and move. Lots changed quickly, and other things have taken years to heal, mend, and even flourish.
As a mom and daughter, our connection is a beautiful one, but a hard-fought one. None of the bonds we are continuing to grow have come easily or all at once. I had to learn her, be there for her through her loud cries and grievous wails. I had to let go of my expectations and become intentional, choosing to be present in the hard and keep trying when things did not come naturally between us. I had to lay down so many parts of myself to love this precious, brokenhearted little one.
I am so grateful for what loving her has taught me; it’s revealed more to me about the Father's enduring love. He does not give up on us when our sadness makes us difficult or when our fear prompts us to manipulate. God calls us to be his own, even while we were yet sinners. This is the gracious love we are to show our loved ones. When we remain patient, committed, willing to listen, kind, and consistent, our sense of connection with others grows. Even in a strained relationship, we can experience restoration and healing when we commit ourselves to doing all we can to embody Christ's selfless love.
Practically, we can do this by:
- Guard our own hearts.
Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Offering an enduring love that remains kind and peaceful takes work. If our hearts are sick, tired, overwhelmed, bitter, shut off, or distracted, we are not able to be there for our loved ones in a healthy way. Invest in your emotional and physical well-being so you can be fully available to connect with your loved ones. - Ask for God’s heart for your people.
There have been times when I did not at all like my husband, kids, friends, or others that I love dearly. When my selfish flesh gets in the way of me seeing them properly, I have to pause and ask God to give me his heart of love for them. Even when my husband does something that gets on my last nerve, he is still a child of God, worthy of love and respect. I need help remembering that! When my kid uses up all my patience, and I feel utterly done with them, I must remember they are fearfully and wonderfully made. God has called me to graciously guide them towards Him. I can’t give up! - Slow down and be present with your people.
Life is moving so fast! If we aren’t careful, we miss our chances to make memories, to hear each other, connect, and grow closer. Connection requires time spent together. Make space to have fun, laugh, talk, date, walk, or play. These are the moments that grow us closest!
Let’s pray ...
Father,
I thank you for modeling for us what sacrificial and enduring love looks like. You never give up on us, no matter how difficult we become, you still love us. Help us to follow your example and offer the people we love grace, patience, presence, and kindness. Show us how to guard our hearts so we don’t become bitter or closed off. Give us your heart of love for our people. Allow us the wisdom we need to slow down and be present with our people. Graciously cover our homes and relationships with your love.
Amen.
