A Reminder That Your Daily Work Matters Deeply to God - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - September 14, 2026

"Give us today our daily bread." — Matthew 6:11

When finances grow tight, it's easy to believe everything depends on us. We calculate the bills, wonder how we'll make ends meet, and carry the weight of tomorrow before it even arrives. Yet when Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He didn't say, "Give us next month's bread." He simply said, "Give us today our daily bread." That doesn't mean we shouldn't plan wisely. It means our confidence rests not in what we can accumulate, but in the God who faithfully provides.

I learned that lesson as a Bible college student. Traveling on weekend ministry teams, I accidentally packed the wrong suitcase—the one holding my scrapbook instead of my clothes. With only a few dollars to my name, I had to buy a dress suitable for the services. Later, not realizing it required dry cleaning, I dropped it off at the cleaners and soon discovered I didn't have enough money to pick it up before our next ministry trip.

A few days before we were scheduled to leave, I opened my campus mailbox and found an envelope containing the exact amount needed to pay my dry-cleaning bill. There was no note, no return address, and to this day, I have no idea who sent it. But I have never forgotten what God impressed on my heart: You can trust Me. I never needed to know who sent it. I only needed to know who prompted it. That simple gift reminded me of another story of God's provision. As the Israelites journeyed through the wilderness, God supplied manna from heaven each morning. They gathered only what they needed for the day. When some tried to store extra in fear that tomorrow's supply wouldn't come, it spoiled overnight. God was teaching them that every new day would be another opportunity to trust Him (Exodus 16).

The lesson remains the same for us. Every paycheck, every meal, every ability to work, every strength to serve, and every blessing we enjoy ultimately comes from the Lord. We honor Him by acknowledging that He is our Provider and by placing Him first in every area of life. 

Financial pressure often tempts us to cling tightly to what we have, but God calls us to live with open hands and generosity, trusting His wisdom and His care. Generosity is not about losing what we have; it's about trusting the One who gave it in the first place. This doesn't mean God always gives us abundance. Sometimes His provision is simply enough for today. But today's provision is still evidence of His faithfulness.

Financial uncertainty has a way of shrinking our vision until all we can see is the next bill or the next unexpected expense. Yet our heavenly Father invites us to lift our eyes higher. The God who has been faithful through every season has not changed. Give us this day our daily bread.

Every day has its own needs. Some days we need wisdom. Some days we need strength. Some days we need healing. And some days we need God's financial provision. Jesus taught us to bring each day's needs to our Father because He delights in caring for His children one day at a time. So today, what do you actually need? Not next month's rent. Not the bill three weeks out. Just today. Bring that one thing to Him—and trust that yesterday's grace was enough for yesterday, and today's grace is already enough for today.

Father in heaven,
Thank You for promising to give me my daily bread. Help me trust You when finances feel tight. I am confident you love me and will take care of me. Teach me to rest in Your faithful provision, to honor You with what You've entrusted to me, and to receive each day's bread with a grateful heart.
