CHURCH HISTORY 1940 - 2012 During the late summer of 1940, the Lord led Mother Pennie Higgs and Mother Ollie Yarbo to call together about eight persons to worship God in the home of Deacon and Sister William Thomas at 38 N. Lexington Avenue, White Plains, NY. There they worshipped until a building at 9 Bank Street was found, completely furnished with pews and piano. The Church was named Little Mount Zion under the first Pastor, Rev. J. Goodwin of Montclair, New Jersey, and was dedicated on November 10, 1940. In May 1941, Elder M. McCray was appointed Asst. Pastor of the Church where he served his post well. In September 1941, Rev. C. J. White was appointed Pastor and the Church continued to grow spiritually and financially. With 58 members on roll, the Church began searching for and purchased a building at 22 1/2 Winchester Street for $5,000. The Mortgage Burning Service was held on November 25, 1947. Many auxiliaries were organized and are still in existence today. In January 1947, Rev. White became ill and Rev. Mrs. V. C. Leach was appointed as Asst. Pastor where she served until 1955. The record shows that great accomplishments were made under the leadership of Rev. White before he passed away on March 3, 1955. In April 1955, Elder J. Goodwin returned as Acting Pastor and Rev. Mrs. I. M. Higgs was appointed Assistant Pastor of the Church. Elder Theophilus A. Sobers of New York City was appointed as the third Pastor and was installed on August 12, 1956. When Elder Sobers came, he immediately saw the great need for a new place of worship. The building had deteriorated. Many times the saints had to sit with their coats on to keep warm and place pails on the floor to catch the water as the rain leaked in. In 1957 a drive began to raise money for a new building. Although many laughed and rebuked the members when work did not begin as soon as they felt it should, the members held fast to their faith in God and believed He would provide them with a place of worship which would later be known as "THE MIRACLE CHURCH". On June 2, 1960 demolition of the old building at 230 Grove Street began and on June 18, 1960, ground breaking ceremonies were performed. Elder Sobers, under God's guidance, had forged ahead and started to bring into reality the impossible dream. On October 16, the plaque was unveiled and can be seen today in the entrance of the church lobby. Finally, on June 18, 1961 at 4pm, the saints and friends marched from 22 1/2 Winchester Street (The Shack in the Back), to 230 Grove Street in a space predesignated by God. Under the leadership of Bishop Sobers (ordained Bishop in 1977), additional land was purchased, the church was completely furnished with pews, carpeting, musical instruments and all mortgages were paid off. On September 25, 1962, Evangelist Carol Davis was appointed as Second Assistant Pastor. Currently serving as Assistant Pastor is Elder Hazel M. Moore. Being a man of foresight and vision, Bishop Sobers ordained Rev. John F. Davis and appointed him as his assistant in 1994. In October 1998, Rev. Davis was installed as Pastor of Little Mount Zion. Under Rev. Davis’ leadership, the membership has grown to over 100 members as souls are being saved and added to the church. Today we are a multi-cultural church with Spanish Services held on Sunday afternoons at 3pm. In 2010 we began the long awaited expansion that God laid on our Pastor’s heart. Phase I of our Three Phase Expansion was completed at the end of 2011. In January 2012 we began a $1M dollar fund raiser to complete the next two phases. We are standing on Christ the solid rock and believing His word for he said to Abraham, “is there anything too hard for God.” WE THANK GOD FOR ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY HAPPY 72ND ANNIVERSARY LMZHC!!
