Destination Spotlight - Montauk, NY
Travel
You know what they say…meet me in Montauk! And in case you haven’t been, please allow me to expound. Montauk is located at the very end of Long Island (to the east) after the Hamptons. It is a charming beach community featuring miles of sandy beaches, lush, green state parks, quaint shopping and dining districts and plenty of accommodation options if you book in advance. The drive can be a little tedious if you are traveling in peak times from the city. But in general, the drive time is about three hours from New York City. You may opt for the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station and Uber while in town.
This is most definitely a summer destination and some venues close for the winter. But I assure you the ocean is what this place is all about. Get out and learn to surf, go deep sea fishing, surf casting or frolic along the water line at the beach. The light here is magical and somewhat difficult to articulate. But those know…know what I’m referring to. The vibe is also unique. People come to Montauk to truly “get away”. They do not come here “to be seen”. What is seen is gorgeous views of the ocean, warm, golden sun and a quaint community with friendly locals.
On my most recent trip, we shot an episode of Beyond Your Backyard and the short video adjacent to this article. It was shoulder season so the crowds had already gone home. We stayed at the Montauk Beach House and I loved it. I loved sitting around the fire pit in the outdoor courtyard sipping cocktails and regaling with the crew stories from the day. The food is also very good. My children loved the pizzas and I enjoyed the appetizers. My favorite dining spot was a casual place called Hooked for a Lobster Roll. Wow…just wow.
Families
They don't heavily market Montauk as a “kid-friendly” place but it most certainly is. However, I believe there is enough to do to keep the tykes happy. This is provided they love water sports.
Peak Season
Peak season in Montauk is Summer. Shoulder Season is Spring and Fall and Low Season is Winter.
Duration
Depending on your activity level, I suggest an extended weekend on your first visit. If you love the vibe, then next time, stay a week.
