Tim Hawkins revealed the lightbulb moment that changed his outlook on comedy. The popular Christian comedian said one simple, straightforward piece of advice completely changed his approach to comedy. Watch the short clip to hear Tim say what caused him to view comedy in a completely different way.
Many people aspire to careers in comedy, especially stand-up comedy. Unfortunately, out of the many who have this as their goal, only a fraction are able to do it. Of course, thats because there are only so many stages and audiences willing to shell out good, hard-earned money, and too many aspiring comedians.
Thats why, in order to get noticed and develop a fanbase, comedians must have a unique point of view. Naturally, from this point of view and how they look at the world, their comedy will come. Also, hopefully, their comedy and jokes are relatable, which goes a long way with audiences, too.
In a clip posted on social media, Tim, during a discussion with fellow comedian Yakov Smirnoff, shared the piece of advice which helped him immensely. It changed how he wrote, looked at and approached comedy.
One of the truths about comedy is when you first start, youre trying to write funny, Tim said. And thats a mistake. The thing is, you write passion. That changed my whole thing. You write what youre passionate about. What are you angry about? What frustrates you? What are you happy about? What do you love?
Thats simple but truly excellent advice. It resembles the popular old saying, Write what you know. If something angers you or makes you happy, the writing and the comedy will feel more authentic, and odds are that others will feel similarly, and people will connect and relate to that.
Later in the clip, Tim revealed where and from whom he received this simple but powerful advice, which helped change his comedy career.
James 1:5 But if any man among you is without wisdom, let him make his request to God, who gives freely to all without an unkind word, and it will be given to him.
