“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV
Two of the places where I often notice God’s presence are in the grocery store and in my kitchen. As I walk through the aisles choosing vegetables, bread, fruit, and other simple foods, I’m reminded of how creative God is. God could have made the world plain and colorless, but instead, he filled it with different tastes, smells, and textures. When I prepare dinner for my family, I also see God’s generosity. Every meal is a reminder that God provides what we need. Chopping vegetables, stirring a pot, or setting the table may seem ordinary, but these small tasks help me remember that God is near and that God’s goodness touches even the simplest parts of life.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, the Bible encourages us to do everything we do for God’s glory. This verse mentions eating and drinking. Those are everyday activities that everyone understands. God is not only interested in the special experiences of our lives; he cares about everything we do. That includes all the mundane tasks we do day by day. Many of us spend a lot of time each day doing routine tasks. We wash dishes, answer emails, fold laundry, drive to work, help children with homework, clean the house, and prepare meals. It’s easy to think that these tasks don’t have much spiritual value. But from God’s perspective, everything we do is important.
When we start to see our tasks from God’s perspective, the mundane becomes meaningful. Washing dishes can become an act of gratitude for the meal we shared. Folding clothes can become a way of caring for the people God has placed in our lives. Driving children to school can become a way to pray for God’s blessings for them. Even sweeping floors can remind us that God brings order and peace into our lives. One reason everyday tasks can feel empty is that we often focus only on the task itself. But if we look beyond the chores and the deadlines and remind ourselves that we’re serving God through these tasks, our perspective changes. Our work may still be ordinary, but our purpose becomes holy. When we do ordinary work like managing a project honestly, patiently helping our children, or listening to a friend who needs to talk, we bring glory to God in the process.
Of course, this doesn’t mean we’ll suddenly enjoy every chore we have to do. Some tasks will still be difficult or stressful for us. God doesn’t ask us to pretend otherwise. Instead, God invites us to include him in those challenging experiences. We can pray while we work, to ask God for strength and to thank God for helping us. Here’s a simple prayer: “Dear God, please help me do this task with love.” That short prayer can move our attention away from frustration and toward connecting with God.
Another helpful practice is to look for signs of God’s goodness during our everyday activities. While shopping and cooking, we can notice the creative abundance of food God provides – and then eat mindfully. While cleaning, we can notice the gift of having a home to care for and thank God for that blessing. Gratitude opens our eyes to God’s presence with us. We don’t have to separate the sacred from the ordinary. God walks with us through both! Grocery stores, kitchens, laundry rooms, offices, and classrooms can all become places of worship when we’re aware of God with us and working through us. So, instead of rushing through your responsibilities, pause and invite God into the task before you. Whether you’re putting away groceries, cooking dinner, or cleaning up your home, remember that you can do it for God’s glory. The smallest act you do in love can become an offering to God.
God sees all the mundane tasks you do in your everyday life, and he appreciates the love you put into them. From God’s perspective, even the most mundane tasks matter!
Let’s pray ...
Dear God,
Thank you for being with me in every part of my day. Thank you for the groceries I buy, the meals I prepare, the work I do, and the people I serve. Help me remember that no task is too small for you. Please help me to enjoy your love even when my responsibilities seem boring or challenging. Teach me to see the wonder of your work in my life every day, even in the most ordinary moments. May everything I do bring glory to you. Help me serve the people in my life with love day by day. Remind me that you’re right here with me in every place I go – in the grocery store, the kitchen, the car, at work, and everywhere else. Let my everyday life honor you.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
